Surfing the tail end of a wave of vacation-based energy, I’ve designed my first “full” icon set in the past…20 years. It seems that way at least. After convening on the couch after work one night to catch our favorite guilty pleasure on television, the subject matter for a potential icon set had hit me like a ton of bricks. A couple proof of concept pieces later, and some momentum was obtained. The Pucca icon set was going to become a reality.
I was first introduced to these characters via my Chinese-born fiancĂ©. In China, Pucca is huge. The grumpy and serious Garu, constantly pursued by ever-exuberant and affectionate Pucca, had reminded us of….well, us. The likable oddball supporting cast, bizarre plot lines, stylized kinetic animation, and genuine humor of it all rounded out what became a really enjoyable little thing. About a year ago, on a night of 900 channels of cable TV with “nothing on” (which seems to be every evening), we came across the Jetix channel (owned by Disney), and the U.S. version of the Pucca cartoon. Much better produced and with a bigger budget than its original counterpart. Yes, I’m a multiple-tattooed, multiple-pierced 32 year-old who likes Pucca.
In any event, the icons. After getting into Illustrator and hammering out a Pucca design, I then moved right into Garu. He was created even quicker, as the crux of his basic form is Pucca’s shape. Pleased with those results, over the next few weeks I went through a list of the “main cast” of the series one-by-one. Pucca’s Uncle Dumplin, her best friend Ching…they all eventually took shape. To compliment the soon-to-be-completed icon set nicely, I banged out a desktop design featuring all the icons of the characters in a very Sooga Village landscape-esque setting, maintaining that same established visual style.
15 icons and 9 desktop size iterations later, everything is now available for download.
I hope people enjoy them.
