Akuma: Pro Wrestler

- as seen on Kotaku, Capcom US, and Capcom Europe

Since the Reagan era, one question has burned brighter than a thousand suns: "What would Akuma (of Street Fighter fame) look like had he been a character in Nintendo's classic 'Pro Wrestling'"? Before we solve that mystery, let's take a look at the characters (save for Great Puma), and their finite color palette artwork, from the game.

Akuma was pretty easy to pixel out and sync with the Pro Wrestling character style, but that 3-color palette limit was extra fun. I'm not sure if Japan is officially his country of origin (Wikipedia says yes, other sites say it's assumed but not a definite), so I left that as a big fat enigma.

The "in the ring" character models are hilarious. We're using the same 3-color palette as the head shot, so detail on these guys is nil. Akuma has shed half his gi (à la the Sota Toys version) to throw down with the other wrestlers, as you can see. Fighter Hayabusa, prepare to die.

At last, a winner is he. Rather than use the front-facing win pose the game gives its champions, I used Akuma's famous post-Shun Goku Satsu pose: back turned, looking over his shoulder with the emblazoned kanji Ten.
